the prodigal son.

In small group yesterday, we went over the prodigal son. [Luke 15:11-32]

And I thought, wow, again? I feel like I've learned everything I can from this passage.

But I was struck in that moment of how pertinent the story is in every season of life.
Inevitably, we are broken people, the younger or the older son - either foolishly running away from God, or selfishly and pridefully forgetting how wonderful it is to be in His presence. We forget how good a relationship with Him is.

I had never identified with the younger son, but if you think about it, we are all the younger son at some point. At some point God gifts us with great blessings and treasure, and then we take it and squander it. Whether it be our spiritual gifts, or our worldly possessions - we ask and pray, and then we take and waste. We forget the goodness of our Father who so freely gave, and seek to build our own kingdoms with what he has given us. Or we neglect to recognize the value of what he has given us. How tragic.

And so I was thankful yesterday, to be reminded of the goodness of the gospel. Of how we truly deserved nothing, but have been given everything through Christ our Lord. Of how we are constantly lost, or wandering off onto the wrong path, and how Christ finds and brings us back, time and time again.

Praise the Lord.
