Your Turn America

I was complimented today on my 'American' accent.

A gentleman said he loved American accents because of their 'strength' and 'confidence'. I know right?

I spent last night with the freshmen Scots in the flat below us.
(Sidenote: It went great, I didn't get drunk or die! We played some drinking games and then went to an eh club so we left early. They called me 'America' all night)
Their accents ranged from slight Irish to distinct Scottish. ('On my dick' became 'Ar ma deck'. I sincerely apologize for the crudeness, but I don't have any better examples).

Today I spent the day with a group of Singaporeans. Singaporean's primary language is English, but it's mixed with a prevalent Malay, Canto, and Chinese slang.

While 'lepz-ing' [Singaporean slang for lepak; loitering] today after dinner with new friends, I shared my difficulty of understanding the different accents. I stated that one English girl had the 'lightest' accent...compared to mine. And I was surprised when everyone pointed out how I had a very strong 'accent'.

Because everyone thinks their accent is the norm.
(Personal confirmation bias is it?)

Anyways, I'm quite enjoying chatting with different international students about their homes, schools, food, traditions, and countries. Incredibly cliche, but everyone is so friendly and I've met so many different people. #extraverted

Cheers
