adulted.

I wrote my 'adulting' post 3 months ago. And in those three months, I have adulted.

Adulted.
Verb. To become an adult.

There was recently a new hire that I was invited to meet for lunch. She had been with the company for about a week at that point. She asked, 'is there anything you wish you knew when you started?', 'is there anything you would advise a new hire?', 'is there anything I should know about the company, the culture?'
I was a bit in disbelief, to be honest, because I was only 7 months in. But even then, I felt like I was the "experienced" one. Oh how quickly we grow up.

So here are my adulting notes** thus far. I actually made a list of these in my schedule/to do book, that and a list of southern slang.
  1. When they say it's "fast-paced", they really mean, there's a ton of work, all the time.
  2. Your work does not determine life or death. The company will not go bankrupt if you are a bit late to work, or a meeting, or make a mistake in an email.
  3. The work will always be there when you get back. It's okay to take a break.
  4. Work-life balance is mostly self-determined. You will need to "get a life" outside of work in order for there to be a balance. Lying on your couch the whole evening is usually not considered a life.
  5. It's your choice whether you like your work or not.
  6. When people note from Texas ask, "How are you?", the proper reply is "How are you?" or "Good, thanks", however I believe the former is more widely used.
**For my company and current role. Some of these are definitely not applicable to everyone. Also does not account for extremes.

General disclaimer - my company tends to hire workaholics, who all work very hard, and are all genuinely concerned with the product of their work. Which is not a bad thing in-it-of-itself, but it does often lend to long hours and tired days.

But here's to God's grace, his patience and soul-filling love, his goodness and his glory in all things.
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
